It feels good to move, but sometimes we actually need to spend some time being still. Restorative Yoga uses a lot of props to fully support the body in a series of postures that are all held for several minutes. When we work in this way, we de-emphasize stretching muscles, although tension will certainly begin to release as we hold these passive poses. The primary goal in this style of yoga, however, is to create a sense of ease in the nervous system, allowing the body to truly relax enough that the organs and other tissues can return to optimal function.
You will need props for class. I teach using two large pillows, two standard size bath towels and one typical blanket that you would find at a yoga studio. If you have yoga bolsters, you can use them in place of one or two of the pillows for most of these poses. Additional yoga blankets can of course be substituted for the towels. Those with knee, hip or low back issues may want to have a chair nearby for some of these shapes - I show you how to use it when it may be necessary. Finally, there is one set up where I suggest using the wall, so you'll need to clear yourself a little spot.
The goal with this sequence would be that you practice it with the video a few times until you get comfortable with the prop set ups. After that, I would recommend that you write it down and practice it on your own with a timer to help you keep track of time. (My voice and bad jokes would presumably become tedious at a certain point). Highly recommend putting on some relaxing music in the background while you practice. Please reach out if you have questions!
